First Day

Hi friends! I'm safe here in Jerusalem Israel!

Also, just have to say the flight was crazy. I feel so blessed because we(19 of us)only had 2 flights. One 5 and the other 11 while the rest of them (61 people) had to have FOUR connecting flights. So now we're called "The Deltas" And they're "The United" Everyone hated us for it because they traveled WAY longer than we did. Just have to say something about the students here real quick. I haven't met them all, but what I know.. I ADORE. People are so nice, this truly is the closest to Zion and i have no idea yet. I know it will get that way. We made it to the center around 4 this afternoon and it was HOT! Quite incredible actually. I really can't even explain my excitement when we walked up the the gates. I started bawling. It still isn't real. I feel like i'm not here... then i look to my right and I can see the whole city! There is a huge celebration going on in old Jerusalem called Ramadan, which as far as I understand the Muslims fast all day long, for one straight month. They are allowed to eat when the sun goes down and before it comes up. I'm not really looking forward to the prayer call around 3 in the morning so they can begin their worship... just a couple hours away! I am blown away at the dedication of these people, and I don't even know them at all. I was amazed yesterday/today we were on the plane and at a certain time a bunch of Orthodox Jew Men stood up and all walked to the back of the plane to worship and pray for 15-30 minutes. This is such a great culture for me to be in I feel i've learned so so much just today. Tomorrow we go tour the old town.

Saying my final goodbyes to the most INCREDIBLE person in this whole world! I miss her so much already. Every though is "MOM WOULD LOVE THIS!"

First Jerusalem meal= SUCCESS! Okay, REAL BIG success. Dinner was on the balcony and so incredible. The prayer and chanting started and it was magical. I guess it's a "Competition" in ways because there are two chantings going on at the same time.

 I see this every day... every hour... every minute. I feel oh so blessed.

Start of the 11 hour plane ride! Our bestest friend we made on the way to JFK! My best buddy that i had a BALL with. He made the whole flight for me. His family was headed to the Slavic countries.Cute baby girl and Lisa again! The stop signs in Jerusalem. I love them!

you know the Christmas song Far, far away on Judeas plain? These are definitely not plaines, very much so mountains. I don't miss Utah QUITE so much.

Okay, I love this place. No no no, I ADORE this place. We have such high security (take a breath mom) we have cards to get in and out of the building, guards, and of course Heavenly Father on our side.

Things that surprised me: How little sleep i really did get, the humidity is crazy! I didn't think i'd deal with it. Looks like i'll be going curly for the rest of my days here. There are pomegranate trees all over the center!! They're beautiful and so so big! I hope we get to eat them one day. The modern way the center is organized, it is gorgeous inside. I did learn that the Church hasn't actually bought the property on which the center is on... they are leasing it! As long as they are leasing we can't proselyte. One day it'll happen though. I have so so much more to say, but my roommates are probably all asleep and I shouldn't still be awake. I love you all! Don't quite miss you yet =) jk... okay maybe not... maybe. I am so sorry for the randomness of this post, i have so much to say and i'm runnin on about 30 mintues of sleep so tomorrow will make so much more sense.

It's time to shove, cram, squash, jam, squeeze, and shove again all my belongings into ONE of these guys! This is the disasterous mess that gets me giddy each time as I walk into my room. Not because of the mess, but to think of where all this stuff will be in 2 DAYS!

Can I just say I absolutely adore Sundays? Cause I do. Today we sung the song "I Stand All Amazed" and I was overcome with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christs love. A flood of tears started as I imagined myself two days from that moment walking where my savior walked. Experiencing the exact place he atoned for me. I was overwhelmed. I am oh so happy.

I said my last goodbyes to my wardies tonight that I'll miss so incredibly much. I'm will be forever amazed at the phenomenal people that Heavenly Father puts in my path... I don't know how he does it, but I will be forever grateful. I'm so excited to meet 79 more people that I will get to learn from for 3 and 1/2 months. Here I come 15 hour plane ride, baggy clothes, camels, 9 hours time difference, crazy culture and lots of learning. Over and out!

What could Heavenly Father be up to now? 19 more days to go.

Miracles upon miracles upon miracles. Let me just tell you about my crazy life. I live a crazy life, because it’s not fun if it’s not. But, this is a good, clean, crazy, blessed life. So to start out…Lacey and I were fourwheeling up snake creek canyon and were so so close to a massive bull moose that could have charged any second. Two days later we went to that exact same area (dumb, I know) While we were on our way we saw a puddle. We were thinking “YAY we’ll get muddly!” not only did we get real muddy but we hydroplaned and crashed about 5 feet off the path. You don’t understand what a miracle this was. We dodged three trees and lacey landed on a big boulder… had she landed more squarely on her back she could be paralyzed. Also, If we would have fallen anywhere else on the path it would have been a rocky mess. We happened to fall into all green, soft bushes. It wasn’t as fun as I’m making it sound though. The four-wheeler landed on top of us. When all the commotion stopped I kicked it off us and we both started freaking out saying, “ARE YOU OK ARE YOU OK??” when we realized we were fine we burst out laughing. We just crashed. And it was awesome. We could have been seriously hurt but we know we had angels around to help us. Then we continue to go riding to where we saw the moose before. We are very cautious getting past the meadow and keep riding. We decide it’s getting late and head back down the mountain. The moose is standing right off the path we have to travel on to get back to the cabin. It’s huge. Glaring at us. (Believe me, I can tell when a moose is glaring from 100 feet away) Has HUGE antlers and will not move. We don’t have a lot of experience with moose so we were thinking if we kept going it would feel threatened and could charged. It probably would have. The only problem was we had a dinner reservation in one hour that we still had to get down the mountain, shower off the mud, and be down in Midway. In one hour which is impossible. We threw that idea out the window and focused on getting out alive. Laceys phone was beeping and flashing red saying “I’m going to die any second!” We had to call the parents who just laughed at us. No help. Call her parents. Laughed then tried to help. We went back up the mountain and down. Up and down4 TIMES! We waited on the mountain for an hour for it to get past. There is NO ONE on the mountain. Haven’t heard any other four wheelers all day. After 10 prayers later we hear a motorbike. Hallelujah. They come and scare it away. The best part was they stopped and talked to us for about 20 minutes and the older boy got Laceys number and had been texting her… super interested!
Third miracle, Lacey and I went horseback riding on my birthday. Lacey got bucked off. Now has a huge bruise on her leg and a big cut on her back. We make it back safe. Only one beetle attacked my face. Life is good.
I am truly humbled to be here today. I shouldn’t even be alive and let me tell you why. The following day my friend Travis and I go horseback riding. The horse I’m riding is 24 which means he’s slow (just the way I like it). We ride up a beautiful Mapleton canyon about 5 miles, eat a sack dinner and head back. We’ve gone about 3 miles and it’s dark to the point where you can only see shadows. I’ve been told horses have excellent night vision and I trusted my horse tucker. A horse that is as old is mine isn’t as quick as 7 year old Charlie (the other horse) and mine may have arthritis etc. Travis’ horse slips on a washed away path, but gains his footing. My immediate, alarmed thought, “Oh please can you make it tucker.” Nope. The horse and I go sliding down a steep ravine side. A bunch of commotion and 20 feel later I end up in the bottom of a rocky, muddy river bed with a 2,000 lbs horse on top of me from the neck down. I am now straddling 2,000 pounds on my legs. I’m not flexible and this hurts. I can hardly breathe with all the weight as I’m trying to screaming Travis’ name. I am thinking “this is the end. I can’t go to Jerusalem. I have so much more life to live and I won’t be able to.” Then realized that’s exactly what Satan would want me to think. Changed my attitude right now. Travis is hustling off his horse to hike down 20 feet to me. After what seemed an eternity He grabs the horses front legs and pulls. I am pulled out. I don’t think I pulled myself out though. I really believe someone is pulling me out because I don’t have hardly any energy from trying to stay breathing with the horse on top of me. (Side note, this horse is completely still the whole time I’m underneath him. Horses don’t do that. I truly believe there were angels there calming him because any other horse would have struggled on top of me and could injure me much, much more.) Travis is lifting this horse. This is when I am so extremely grateful for his strength. If it would have been ANY of my other friends, I really don’t think I would be able to get out. He lifts the horses leg and I slide out, but my leg is stuck between this horse and the boulder that I am now realizing my bottom landed on. The horses front legs are to my right and his back are to my left. My leg could crack in half any moment because of the weight of this horse on this rock. Travis’ horse starts going crazy not knowing what to do when we’re down in the stream so he running and making lots of noise everywhere around us, which upsets my horse. My horse starts kicking his legs with my head right in between the four. I get knocked around and screaming, something told me to stop screaming and Travis starts to calm down the horse. He is still. We get right back to work and Travis tries to hoist up his two front legs to get me out. 5 minutes later we still can’t get my leg to move. I yell, “Get down here we’re saying a prayer!” That was the most sincere, heart felt prayer I believe I’ve ever said. Lots and lots of pulling and yelling to Travis “BELIEVE THIS WILL WORK!” we get my leg out. I run (yes I am able to run) to the other horse to calm him down. Now I’m a muddy mess sobbing on this horses neck for gratitude to my Heavenly Father for allowing me to get out. I hurt, but as far as I can tell nothing is broken. Travis tries for a while to get the horse up. I’ve heard that when a horse is on it’s back like that, its air way will close and it can be suffocated. (thank goodness I didn’t know this until a couple days later) Eventually he has to get himself up and we say a heart felt prayer of gratitude. This could be so much worse. We walk, leading the horses the remaining 2 miles in the pitch black. The gross thing about this was there was a dead cow upstream a ways and I landed in that stream. I was probably in a bit of cow blood. My leg that got stuck between the boulder and the horse is hurting, and I probably have a pool of blood in my shoes by the time we get back, but I’m alive and I can’t believe it. The little bit of talking we did on the way down Travis had no idea how stuck I was under the horse. Absolutely amazing. We arrive to the truck realizing how muddy we both are, trying to see if Tucker is ok. We just have to get home.
I survived. Travis and I survived. All four of us survived. I am counting my blessings incessantly because IF: This had been Travis stuck I could have done NOTHING. In order to get cell service I would have had to ride down 2 more miles, get in the truck, of which the keys were in his pocket, and drive 20 miles before I got cell service. It truly was a blessing. T
I came home a muddy, sore mess, but ecstatic I was alive. The following morning we went to the doctors and got about 8 x-rays. The doctor was in awe that I didn’t break one single bone. Especially my pelvic bone, which would have had be on bed rest for about 6 weeks or more. Which would have meat no Jerusalem. I didn’t even break my skin anywhere on my body! How is this possible. I walk like a 90 year old man for the next 4 days with a bunch of cool bruises all over my body. I truly cant believe I’m alive. I can’t wait to see what Heavenly Father has planned for me now.

How it all happened.

So... 30 days away and I'm dying to go. Really, I don't think there is 10 minutes of my day I don't think of it. Today I got my Journal for Jerusalem. My heart skipped a beat and my stomach flip flopped. I'm going. It's real. How? Why? Me? How'd I get so blessed? I've been reading Matthew, Mark, Luke and John to prepare. I just finished Matthew and Christ just got crucified. I get to be where he was placed, where he taught. I feel happily overwhelmed. I really can't wait.
Just as a preface, this experience is kind of personal, but as I'm going to make this blog into a book when I return and I don't want to forget how Heavenly Father made this all possible. I keep thinking my life is figured out and I'm flyin' high until He tells me, "Wait! I'm in charge! I'm taking care of you!" So, here's how it goes... I was dating this wonderful guy. Like most stories are it was almost perfect. I'd never been treated so well in my life. Didn't even know someone so nice could be on this planet? And he was mine? How? We had been dating for a couple months and I had been counting down the days until I could turn in my applications for Jerusalem. He knew this was my intentions and would support me with whatever I decided. They went in. I filled all the requirements and this really could happen! So as far as I understand there are 80 people going, 40 girls 40 boys and about 100-120 applied. There is a small chance I couldn't get in. If I didn't get in they would randomly select the waiting list number. I was in Texas visiting my sister, her husband and cute baby between semesters when the letter was going to come. My brother-in-law is going to South Western Medical School and we decided to go visit the campus. There's a beautiful reserve right on campus and we were going to enjoy the surroundings. Right as I opened the car door my phone rang. It was mom. She had the letter in her hand. Melis and Reed were anxious and excited and I was a nervous wreck. I wanted it so so bad. What if I didn't? What would I do then? Mom opened it. I was rejected. 10th on the waiting list. There is NO way anyone was going to drop out of this! Who would apply and not go?! NO ONE. I wasn't going to Jerusalem. A few hidden tears were shed. My sister kept encouraging me to call my boyfriend, but I couldn't because I knew I'd burst into tears. All he got was a text and I have to admit I think he was ecstatic with the news. =) So now what? Do I go back to Idaho? Do I apply again? Do I get married? I've been studying spanish and looking into a school in Chile so is that what i'm supposed to do? These questions went over and over in my head and prayers daily. Spring semester started in Idaho and I did my research on Chile and it was looking more and more appealing to me. A couple months went by and I got the feeling it was time to try something new. I had to break up with this wonderful man. I loved him. How could I? Heavenly Father reassured me time and time again it was the right thing to do. We broke up, and like every break up it was not easy. Painful actually. I was really getting excited about Chile! My brother is living there with his family and they could go check it out for me and it could happen! Little did I know what Heavenly Father had in mind. About 2 weeks after the break up I get a call during class and I didn't recognize the number and ignored it. After class I checked my voicemail and it was from the BYU Jerusalem Center office, she had a couple questions about my application. That confused me a whole ton, because it was over and done! I wasn't going. I called her back and 9 other people had dropped out! If one more person dropped out I would go! How did this happen? I was next in line and didn't have any of my forms in. I had two hours to frantically send in all my papers by fax, email and phone calls. 5 o clock came and they were in! Still a chance I wasn't going. Could be even a month before I found out. 2 days later we were doing a final review for my Heroic Journey class and It's her. I knew what it was. I almost jumped out of my seat right that second. It kept ringing in my hand and I didn't know what to do. I quietly ran outside and answered the phone. I was going. I WAS GOING! FALL SEMESTER I WAS GOING! Flood of tears came, and I do believe that was the happiest moment of my life thus far. I literally screamed and got plenty of wonderful looks. Who knows what Heavenly Father has in store after this, but I know because I listened and obeyed to Him, wonderful blessings came to pass. This would not have happened, had I not listened. Who knows what the future will hold...

Cool Facts About Jerusalem

So pretty much I'm a bit burnt out of school. Only two more days and about 4 hours until I'm done with Spring semester! So to procrastinate just a little longer I learned a bunch of new facts!
1. There are 763,800 residents over 48.3 sq mi
2. Settled in the 4th millennium BC, which makes it one of the oldest cities in the world. We knew that, but I get to live there!
3. Jerusalem has been destroyed twice, besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times. Holy man. That's a lot. Hope none of these happen while i'm there! =)
4. Elevation 2,490 ft. Provo is at 4,551 ft so a little over half of Provo!
5. As of December 2007, Jerusalem had a population of 747,600—64% were Jewish, 32% Muslim, and 2% Christian.
6. My moms friend Anne Madsen, she and her husband Truman Madsen were directors over there and in conversation Anne and my mom were talking about the prophesy that there will be a temple in Jerusalem. Anne said that the Jerusalem Center could be changed into a temple in 48 HOURS! 48 hours. Can you believe that?! So incredible. The church is true. That's all there is to it!
