When we were at Mt. Hertzel on Monday we went to his grave while a bunch of people were frantically trying to set up a stage for a big memorial to Prime Minister Rabin.
Last night our Judaism teacher showed up in Jeans and T-shirt, which is extremely unlike him. He started class very stressed out. He had been crushing olives with his kids at the center with the Judds and the Muhlesteins and on his way home we went through some Palestinian roads that he had been avoiding for months. He was in a hurry and thought that he would be ok to go through these streets. He was driving his two kids home, to turn back around to make it to teach our class. He got stuck in traffic and saw groups of people surrounding the cars in front of him. He was hoping to get out of the traffic, but a bunch of young kids surrounded his car and started throwing and hitting rocks against it. Thankfully no rocks went through the windows, but he was extremely shaken up in worry of his kids safety. He got out with damage to his car and barely enough time to make it to our class.
It was 15 years today that Prime minister Rabin was assassinated. At the time it was at the end of a rally for the Oslo Accords which , "was the first direct, face-to-face agreement between the government of Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). It was intended to be the one framework for future negotiations and relations between the Israeli government and Palestinians, within which all outstanding "final status issues" between the two sides would be addressed and resolved." A right-wing religious Zionist, Yigal Amir assassinated him as he opposed the peace initiative and the Oslo Accord. The security guards have seemed more cautious today as they walked around the building locking it mid-day. This is so crazy to be in the middle of this conflict.
Life is so different outside of America, I love learning so so much. We had a Forum tonight about the Israel- Palestinian Peace Initiative from Dr. Yossi Alpher. I want to be more involved with the world... always. Thank goodness for my major.
Whew, what an experience. Poor guy. In a few months you will just fly away to good ole America and those sweet people you have grown to love with continue their life in danger. Tis an uncertain world these days. Just stay safe, ya hear?
